Every habit of action is run by a habit of thought.  Frequently, we try to exert control over the action, to get the result that we want, but this can require a huge effort of willpower, and can become frustrating and exhausting when we fail.  If we are not getting the desired action, the chances are there is a thought or a belief we formed in earlier years that we are unaware of, that is preventing our success.

Until recently, science believed that if a person had suffered negative life experiences such as trauma, this was saved to long-term memory and was therefore unchangeable.  However, in 2000 a scientist named Karim Nader discovered that long-term memories, once recalled, become vulnerable to change, can be updated and then ‘saved’ back to the brain’s long-term memory with new learning.  This process is called reconsolidation. 

In fact, we use this process every day when we learn a new aspect about something we already know or have a moment when we see something from a new perspective which changes our thinking.

In order to change a habit of action or behaviour, we need to discover the origin of the belief that has led to the undesirable action or behaviour.   The belief was created as a result of a repeated habit of thought. When we get to the root cause of a belief and change it, we are able to create new thoughts, which lead to new choices, and new choices lead to new behaviours, and new behaviours lead to new experiences, and new experiences lead to new emotions/chemistry in the body, and new emotions drive new thoughts which allow us to create a new future unhindered by the past.
